If it ain't broke.. Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner review

I am not known for my love of change. Infact, two of my favourite words are Routine and Rimmel Glam Eyes (Ok, that was 3 words but stay with me..)

For 10 years I have been drawing on my daily eyeliner flicks with the cult beauty product, the saviour of anyone who wants bold eyes without the essence of panda.

This trusty product has followed me everywhere and has earned its place in my make-up bag.

However, just recently, I’ve been tempted to try something new. Lured by promises of 24hr staying power, easy application and a deep black gel. After a bit of research, I plumped for Maybelline’s Lasting Drama Gel Liner in Black Excess.

Being used to a small, precise brush, trying to draw a thin line on my eyelids with this felt like I was daubing it on in permanent marker. I though perhaps it was my technique and vowed to try again.

Honestly, it is like dragging a blunt pencil across your eyelids, the product ends up in a jagged, thick line and as for cats-eye flicks, forget it. In principle, it’s a good idea, but I struggle to see how anyone with normal eyelids could apply this to themselves. The rubber nib is too sharp, the pen itself is too chunky and a bit awkward to hold and god forbid you make a mistake. This stuff is like anti-vandal paint. It took me 3 different eye make-up removers before I could see skin again.

In hindsight, I should have bought the pot and brush of gel liner, but after wasting £8 on this, I’m sticking with my old faithful for now.

On a more positive note, I also purchased the Maybelline brow satin pen, which is brilliant. One end is a roll-up pencil and the other is a powder for filling in brows. Really easy to use and rids you of the obviously drawn on look.

I suppose one out of two isn’t bad!
